The 5th key
You’ve reached the fifth and final step of the FOLDORI method: The Strap. While Q has engineered the physics of the Paper Belt to perfection, your hands are the final piece of the puzzle.
Unlike the previous steps of folding, sticking and stacking, the strap is a purely mechanical movement. It's the moment you transform flat cardstock into a rigid, 90-degree frame. To ensure your Sunrise Dreams ivory case is solid and ready to coil its ten layers, follow our pro-tip steps.
Pre-folding
Q has integrated precise score lines into each of the four belts. Before you attempt to thread the belt through the slits, you must pre-fold along these lines.
To do so, gently fold the belt at each score line toward the interior of the corner. This 'wakes up' the paper fibers and ensures the belt follows its intended path as smoothly as possible. If you skip the pre-fold, the belt will fight the movement, making it difficult to thread through the die-cut slits.
Assembly sequence
The assembly sequence works best when the paper ivory case is assembled first. Lay it flat on a clean surface and secure all four corners with their respective paper belts.
Once the corners are locked at 90 degrees, you can test the raw 10-layer stacking by dropping each layer one by one into the case's back opening, from the first to the tenth layer, but on their reverse side. Afterwards, turn the case plus its ten layers upside down and see how the raw scenery looks like. This raw stacking step ensures you will be comfortable doing it with the fully assembled layers which are more delicate to manipulate.
Then you can start assembling your DIY elements onto each layer following Mary's Design Handbook and the FOLDORI Studio's composition ideas in case you purchased Extension kits.
After the DIY elements assembly, it's time to peel off and stick the pre-assembled 36 ivory stripes on each layer's reverse side where the four dashed lines are marked.
Finally, do the stacking step again this time with the fully assembled layers. This sequence ensures everything is perfectly aligned before you close the ivory case with its signature FOLDORI bird lock.
Paper Belts, and their dual slits
The two slits on the belt's perpendicular tab are created through refined die-cutting. Because they're positioned close together, slits are designed for a specific, firm hold rather than adjustable tension.
After pre-folding the 4cm belt along its score lines, simply thread it through the perpendicular tab's only slit and back out through the main tab's first slit then second slit. At the end of the strapping, the belt's round edge should be visible from the external side.
In reality, you don't need to worry about it being "too tight" or "too loose". The design is fixed-tension. Once the belt is through, it has achieved the exact pull needed to hold the tabs together.
What is paper tension?
You might notice that after assembly, the belt loses a tiny fraction of its initial tension. This is perfectly normal. Paper is a natural fiber, and it settles into its new shape.
The belt will never unstrap on its own. Furthermore, once the paper ivory case is tucked into the premium tangerine case, the walls will provide further lateral support. The belt has done its job of squaring the corner; the case does the job of holding it for eternity.
If things don't go as planned
We know you might be tempted to assemble and disassemble your set to show your friends how the FOLDORI magic works. While the belt is forgiving, constant or intense manipulation can lead to a stress fracture in the cardstock.
If ever a belt or any other part breaks, do not panic. Reach out to Samwise via WhatsApp. He's our FOLDORI Studio open community coordinator and can assess if we can send a replacement part or if there’s a manual fix. We’d rather help you fix it than have you lose the joy of the build.
A note from the Library: the "Aha!" moment
Samwise recently spoke with a creator who was building their third FOLDORI set. They told him that when they reached the Paper Belt, they stopped for a full minute just to look at it. They said, "I’ve been using paper my whole life, but I’ve never seen it behave like a mechanical fastener".
That is the heart of what we do. Even with a material as old as civilization, there are still breakthroughs to be made. The Strap is proof that we are well on our way to a "no tools, no glue" future. As a returning customer, you’re proactively investing in the low-tech evolution of sustainable materials through advanced paper engineering.

Trust the score lines, follow the sequence, and don't overthink the tension. The engineering is there to support you. If you get stuck, we're only a WhatsApp message away.
