Dilemma of the right-angle
In the early days of designing the Sunrise Dreams ivory case, we faced a persistent mechanical hurdle. Paper, by nature, wants to return to its flat state. When you fold a corner to 90 degrees, the fibers exert an outward force. Paper engineers would traditionally use chemically bonding glue to counter this force, or settle for a corner that eventually flares out and loses its crispness.
As an engineer, I love playing with materials. We found a way to hold the paper case together using nothing but the material’s own structural integrity. The solution? Paper Belts.
The 5th key: The Strap
You may have noticed the five pictograms on the back of our premium tangerine case: Fold, Peel, Stick, Stack, and Strap. The Strap is the final step that locks the entire sculpture into its housing.
Unlike a taped joint, which relies on the chemical bond of an adhesive, the Belt relies on mechanical tension. We engineered a 4cm extension on one tab that feeds through two precision-cut slits on the perpendicular tab. By pulling the belt through, you're joining two sides while strapping the corner into a permanent, perfect 90-degree angle.
The science of pre-scoring
Using our standard 250gsm cardstock was a deliberate choice. A lower weight would have reached its tensile break point and torn under the pull. A higher weight would have been too springy, eventually loosening the tension like a tired rubber band.
To make the 250gsm paper behave like a flexible strap, the secret was to leverage the CO2 laser to create precisely spaced micro-scores. These allow the belt to curve around the corner with zero resistance, ensuring that 100% of the force goes into the 'cinch' rather than fighting the paper's stiffness.
A forgiving framework
One of the most human-centric benefits of the Paper Belt is its reversibility. Glue is an ultimatum; once it sets, the story is over. Our belts, however, are a conversation. While we don't recommend constant manipulation, belts allow you to disassemble the case if you ever need to perform a deep-clean of the internal layers or adjust an element.
It solves the tolerance margin problem. In paper DIY, a 1mm error can ruin a corner. The belt allows you to remove that tolerance out of the equation, squaring the case manually to your own satisfaction.
The mark of the maker
While the box is eventually tucked into its premium display case, Paper Belts remain a subtle signature of the FOLDORI engineering philosophy. They are visible to the curious eye and the holding hand.
We didn't hide them, we're proud of them. They represent a milestone where we proved that premium doesn't have to mean permanent. It means precision. When you see those four belts at the corners of your Sunrise Dreams set, you're looking at the solution that finally made glue-free corners a reality.

The first time I strapped a prototype box together and saw it stand perfectly square without a single drop of adhesive, I knew we had something special. It turned the assembly from a 'craft project' into a 'mechanical build'. It’s the difference between sticking things together and truly assembling them.
