Our 4 Handover checklists: your way to the FOLDORI brand universe

Your specialty is a strength

At FOLDORI, we don't expect you to be a jack-of-all-trades. If you're a world-class writer, we want your words. If you're a brilliant illustrator, we want your lines.

To build a co-creation powerhouse, we’ve made our Handover Checklist modular. We match your specific expertise with other experts in our team or our community to ensure the final product is a display of excellence in every dimension.

Character Design Specifications

0.25% royalty + 0.1% cross-reference bonus.

  • Character design: we expect a total of ~10 high-resolution renders including a minimum of 3 different postures/angles, and 3 different moods (all in colour)
  • Key traits & emotions: what is your character's personality type, its leading feelings, how it reacts to events? What truly defines it? How will it evolve over time?
  • Backstory: where does your character come from? How was it raised, what obstacles has it faced, and who will it want to become when joining the FOLDORI universe?
  • Journey: how do you imagine you character will be used within the FOLDORI brand universe, what would its ideal journey be? From a short-term execution (1 set) to a long-term vision (cross-referencing) standpoint.
  • Symbolism: is there a deeper meaning connecting your character to its story, a hidden message you're using the character to share with the FOLDORI audience?

Story Writing Specifications

2% royalty. Must be character-led, either your own or using FOLDORI's current list of published characters.

  • Word count: between 2000-5000 words. Longer stories are welcome if they can be divided into a series of multiple "episodes": if that's the case, the royalty structure will evolve accordingly.
  • Genre: the FOLDORI brand is currently being built around a poetry-fantasy sub genre, however most genres are welcome as long as it shows coherence within the FOLDORI universe - this includes a focus on self-development (as part of the mindfulness behind the FOLDORI DIY model).
  • Writing style: what is the most prominent style? We don't favour any style in particular, however since there's an evident aesthetic approach to the FOLDORI brand we emphasize the importance of a poetically sound writing style. About the power of the story itself, is it written in a way that feels like a short novel we want to read and re-read from time to time?
  • Characters: are they taken from the FOLDORI Character List or did you create new ones? If your story is based on new characters, do they follow the FOLDORI Character Specifications? Are your characters text-based or do you also illustrate them? In the last case, you are eligible to the additional Character royalty structure.
  • Plot: does your story unfold in a way that would be able to be illustrated and then translated into a paper art set? Does it respect an academic-style of event mapping or does it break new grounds? A storyboard is a great piece to add but not mandatory.
  • Morale: is there a deeper meaning connecting characters to the story, a hidden message you want to share with the FOLDORI audience? Since the accepted word count is quite short, did you still manage to leave enough space for breathing and structure?
  • Hero-based extension kits: if we were to create an Extension pack for your character, what are the small "sparkles" or key theme that you'd envision?

Scene Illustration Specifications

3% royalty + 0.1% cross-reference bonus.

  • Illustration design: must be character-driven, not just an art piece
    • What are your preferred file formats?
    • With what quality settings do you usually render your illustrations?
    • With what maturity level do you usually render your illustrations? Do you have a preferred development cycle? If so, please include your milestone model from first sketch to final coloured illustration.
  • Slice-of-life genre: is your illustration the embodiement of a "snapshot", a fixed moment in time depicting your story? If not, what is the genre or sub-genre of your illustration? Once turned into a paper art set, are you envisionning potential movable parts to increase the level of interaction with the audience?
  • Characters: are they taken from the FOLDORI Character Database or did you design new ones? Either way, did you create enough character postures so that your characters can be reused for cross-referencing in other FOLDORI-branded works?
  • Colour palette: what is your colour palette and why did you chose that one specifically? Is there symbolism and meaning behind it, does it follow current/incoming trends?
  • Clutter-free composition: is your illustration purposefully designed to display a feeling of abundance while maintaining high visual focus and brand coherence, especially if Extensions are planned?
  • Hero-based extension kits: if we were to create an Extension pack for the scene, what are the small "sparkles" or key themes that you'd envision?
  • Print-ready
    • Bleed margins: 2mm, following the illustration's strokes and fills
    • Folder structure: we expect properly (named and) grouped objects, paths, etc.
    • Fills: 4-colour CMYK for offset printing (our typical paper is uncoated, textured, with a 150-400gsm grammage)
    • Strokes: Scoring path in solid red, (Laser) Cutting path in solid blue, (Laser) Engraving path in solid green

Paper Art Specifications

Between 1%-4% royalty + 1000€ one-time bonus for reusable innovative features.

/!\ We accept other architecture types than our layer-stacking Classic Set. Feel welcome to apply describing your concept and we'll work out the model and deliverables together.

  • Visual deliverables: are you more comfortable with sketches, illustrations, 3D renders, or other formats? We don't favour one or the other - but we need to know in advance, since the royalty structure depends on the maturity level (i.e., if you do the illustration + paper engineering you will be compensated differently than if you come up with a structural concept without illustration).
  • Papercut proficiency: do you do everything by hand? Do you own or have access to a prototyping lab that includes scalar plotting, laser cutting, and other relevant machinery?
  • Prototype maturity: the maturing phase will come later on, however in order for us to be convinced by your concept it's much easier to have a workable solution to demonstrate.
  • Assembly level: must follow the FOLDORI "no tools, no glue" brand promise for an entry- to mid- level DIY audience. As of now, the only accepted non-mechanical element is double-sided tape.
  • Implementation of FOLDORI features: does your design include interactive folding steps? FOLDORI-type paper belts? Layer stacking (we accept between 6-14 layers no more no less)? Or even more innovations you would like your design to contribute with?
